a trip to Monticello

Maira Kalman writes - and draws - of her experience in visiting the home of a remarkable man, the second President of the United States. I've been to his home only once, on a trip to Washington with my parents and grandmother years ago. I remember the bed, though, that separated his dressing room and his study.

  1. Jefferson was the third president. John Adams got in a term between Washington and Jefferson.

That being said, Monticello is an interesting visit, showing off both Jefferson's creativity and genius and the odd dictotomy of a guy who can write of inaliable rights yet own quite a few slaves. My wife and I went a few years back when we were in Richmond for a friend's seminary graduation.
