teary-eyed at the local cinema

I am man enough to admit it. I have cried before while watching a film - maybe not out and out blubbering, but I've shed a few tears. I find Hoosiers to be incredibly touching. When I first saw it, I was very emotional at the end of LOTR: ROTK. I refuse to watch Brian's Song because I fear I would go through a box of kleenex.

It happened again yesterday. And I was watching X-3: The Last Stand, of all things. No, I'm no fanboy when it comes to X-Men - I was into the Archie comics as a youngester, basically because I thought that Betty and Veronica were both very fine. But, I have greatly enjoyed the X-Men movies and I own the first two on DVD.

The movie did pack some genuine emotion, something I wasn't expecting from a movie directed by Brett Ratner. I was expecting some overblown action sequences, and of course they were there. I was expecting quick pacing and a poor use of the editor, and that was there. But, I did not expect emotion. If you've seen the movie, you'll know there's a scene in particular that I'm referring to. I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it.

  1. I always cry when Magneto fails to take over the world. He seems to have a better grip on reality than Professor X.:)

  2. Sojourner: You realize, of course, that Magneto would have you snuffed out if he ruled the world. Unless you're a mutant, that is - then he'd think you're a-okay.

  3. I was incredibly shocked after the last scene with the Professor...of course, I didn't stay for the credits and I've heard there was an extra bit at the end...

  4. Jason: Ah.... you should have stayed until the end. I only did so because I was told to, or I would have left and missed it, too. If you go to the movie spoiler site, you'll be able to read about the last scene.

  5. Matt,

Do you see my avatar? I'm not just looking at that frog; I'm talking to it. Definitely a Class 1 mutant power, but it keeps me safe from Magneto.

You know, I missed the mystery scene as well. I didn't know about it. I need to go and read what happened.

  6. Brad: It's fine for you to talk to the frog, but I'll start to worry if you tell me that it talks back to you. Makes me wonder what all goes on in the bayous of Lousiana...

  7. I thought the movie as a whole sucked.

I'm waiting for the DVD of all of the cartoon episodes.

  8. Oh yeah---I know exactly the scene you're talking about, the one where Rebecca Romijn's character dies...that was very sad indeed.

As a whole, I didn't enjoy the movie, but then I saw it at a drive in, started 30 minutes late, and I was really there for the other feature, Mission Impossible III, which if you want emotion, THERE's a bunch of emotion for ya.

  9. Brian: Actually, I felt almost sad for Mystique. She was so instrumental to Magneto's plans in the first two movies, and then she was callously left aside in this one. Yes, I do realize she's a completely evil character, so that's why i felt *almost* sad.
