123 Meme

Although he didn't ask me to, I think I'll participate in this meme to which Pastor Mark links. I'm sure he won't mind. There's a bit of mystery to it, which I think enhances almost any experience.

Here are the rules:
1. Pick up the nearest book ( of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

I'm presently sitting on the couch in our living room. Directly behind me is the bookshelf. I've reached back behind me and found a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading last year, Nathaniel Philbrick's Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War.

Page 123 is the first page of chapter eight, entitled "The Wall." The Pilgrims had just enjoyed the First Thanksgiving with over 100 Pokanokets, which did indeed include some wild turkey. As soon as the meal starts to fade into their memories, an unexpected ship appears just off Cape Cod.
Then, at the end of November, a lookout atop Fort Hill sighted a sail making for Plymouth Harbor. Many of the men were out working in the surrounding countryside. They must be called back immediately.
From where did the ship come? Were the sailors friendly or not? You'll have to get the book to find out...

Just like Pastor Mark, I'll ignore the instruction of tagging five others. If you are so inclined, feel free to join in.

  1. You asked for it:

"I would laugh, I would applaud," the little cough might be interpreted; "but modesty forbids."

"Stertorious what?" asked Lucy. "Do remember that I've never been educated."

And... even though the MEME doesn't require it, here's the next wonderful sentence: "Warbling your native woodnotes wild!" said Willie.

This conversation takes place in Aldous Huxley's novel "Point Counter Point," published in 1928.

  2. Ok, I wanted this to be authentic but it ended up contrived. Here's why...The first book I picked up which was the closest was my devotional book, I followed the directions and decided it wouldn't have made sense. The second closest was my Bible. Unfortunately after following the directions again you would've gotten 5 verses of geneologies from Numbers 1, BORING! So I went into the bedroom and picked up the book that I am currently reading, Obsession by Ted Dekker. Coincidentally the 123 page is the first page of Ch. 17, the chapter I stopped on last night! The book is great so far and is about a Holocaust surviver who branded her son before they would be separated in hopes of finding him after the war. She died before finding him, however her death is what caused her son Stephen to find her. He believes she left him something very valuable...

The blond German had blue eyes too, but were soft, distracted. Braun's were cold, still. Like death.

The German's as in WW2 are the enemy in this book. They too are trying to find what Rachel (Stephen's mother) left behind!
